Fatsia Japonica – Variegated Japanese Aralia

Glossy, palm-like leaves reaching out for the sun, the Variegated Japanese Aralia is potted drama. The high sheen finish emphasises deep-lobed, dark-green leaves, speckled with white variegation that changes with the seasons and as the plant ages. A subtle cluster of white flowering erupts in the autumn, contrasting against the lush tropical greens. This robust, low-maintenance plant requires little effort to look good, subtly stealing the show.

Horty Hints

Go big or go home! If you like big bold leaves, removing the berries that appear after flowering will encourage the leaves to grow larger.

Sensitive to salt! Try to water with distilled water. The chemicals and salts in tap water can cause leaf edging to turn brown.

Too much sun, hun! Yellowing leaves is a sign that your plant has had too much sun. Relocate to rejuvenate.

Light

Prefers a shaded area to bright, indirect light. Will tolerate some lighter shade, but too much light will cause yellowing of leaves. Avoid direct sunlight.

Watering

In the growing season ensure the soil remains moist at all times, watering when the top of the soil feels slightly dry to the touch. In winter allow the potting mix to dry out a little more between watering. Do not allow to sit in soggy soil. Use soft water if possible.

Temperature

Frost hardy, this plant can tolerate lows of –10°C. Prefers cooler indoor temperatures of 15-21°C.

Humidity

Average indoor humidity levels are fine. Keep away from heat sources where it may dry out.

Feed

Feed once a month with a balanced fertiliser during the growing period.

Moderately fast growing, once established the Fatsia japonica can reach indoor heights of 2m.
