The Asplenium Parvati has very distinctive, thick, dark green fronds, which are quite different from any others. The leaves are hardy and shiny giving the plant an extremely robust nature, making it very forgiving of periods of drought, dry air conditions and temperature fluctuations.
This Asplenium hybrid was created by Chris Goudey of Austral Ferns in Victoria, Australia. It’s technical Latin name is Asplenium dimorphum x difforme (x Parvati) and it is also sometimes known as Asplenium ‘Austral Gem’.
Asplenium Parvati Mother Fern Care & Info Guide
Horty Hints
Spotted something spotty? Don’t panic, the brown Spots on the underside of its leaves are spores, and naturally occur when the plant reproduces.
Shade-seeker! Direct sunlight will scorch the leaves and dark corners will stunt growth. Filtered light is right, so try putting near a north or east-facing window.
Remove excess dust with a damp cloth, however take care to avoid tender new fronds. Avoid using leaf shine as the fronds are sensitive to chemicals.
Light
The Mother Fern prefers moderate, indirect light. Avoid placing it in direct sunlight and deep shade. An east or north-facing window will serve the fern best.
Watering
Water thoroughly during the growing season but less so in the winter. Keep moist but do not allow to stand in water. Bird’s Nest Ferns are best watered around edge, directly onto the soil, as pouring into the crown may cause it to rot.
Temperature
Asplenium Parvati benefits from cool to average household temperatures between 18°C and 24°C. Avoid draughts.
Humidity
Asplenium Parvata is more tolerant of low humidity conditions than other Asplenium. While not required, relocating the plant to a steamier room such as the kitchen or bathroom may improve growth.
Feed
Does not require a lot of extra feeding. Apply a weak solution occasionally during the growth season.
Height & Growth Rate
The Mother Fern is moderately slow growing and has an ultimate indoor height of around 50cm.
Origin
Asplenium Parvati is native to Australia.
